Pet portrait artists don’t generally have much to do with seascapes. Even so, it still can be interesting to have a go at this type of subject. The sea is a complex entity and, for any painting to work well, you need to design the composition so that is has a definite focal point. Pick this focal point to represent the nature of your subject with rest rest of the composition there to support but not compete with this element.

It doesn’t mean, however, that this needs to be something physical. The way you use colour and tone can be manipulated to draw attention to a specific area of the painting. The eye is always drawn to areas of high contrast, so retain the darkest and lightest colours for the focal point whilst subduing the surrounding tones.
