The Australian Terrier, affectionately known as the Aussie, is a small, but solidly built dog. One of the smallest terrier breeds, these delightful little characters stand just 10 inches at the withers and weigh only about 14 pounds. The coat is medium length and shaggy and can be solid tan, varying shades of blue, blue and tan, or solid red.
The Aussie was the first native Australian breed to receive Kennel club recognitio. It is believed to have been bred from the Norwich, Yorkshire, Skye, Cairn and Dandie Dinmont terriers. Like most terrier breeds, they were originally used for rodent control, but they also excelled at dispatching snakes, and were even used to herd sheep.
This is breed with personality to spare. The Aussie manages to retain all of the natural spunkiness typical of a terrier, while displaying few of the less desirable terrier traits. They are spirited, curious and self-assured, with seemingly boundless reserves of energy. They are brave and loyal, ready to take on all-comers to protect their loved ones. But they are also loyal and affectionate, with a real eagerness to please that makes them very easy to train.

The Aussie is less inclined to bite than most other terriers, but they do love to bark and you’ll have to train your dog to curtail this behavior. Consistent pack leadership will nip any inclination towards dominance in the bud, but in truth this is not usually an issue with this breed. They are good with children and with other pets, and are generally a delight to have around.
The Australian Terrier is a robust, healthy breed that suffers from few serious diseases. However, as with any purebred dog, the Aussie does have a few common health concerns. These include diabetes, skin allergies, luxating patella, cataracts and ear infections. Median lifespan for the breed is 12 years.
Grooming an Aussie Terrier is easy, but does take a bit of work. The dog needs to be brushed every day as this releases natural oils and lends the coat its distinctive sheen. Bathing should be limited to those occasions when it is unavoidable as it strips the protective oils from the skin.
In addition to home grooming the coat will require hand stripping once or twice a year. The Aussie sheds very little and may be a suitable pet for an allergy sufferer.
This is an adaptable dog that will be content to live in an apartment as long as it gets sufficient exercise. Daily walks are a must and you’ll also develop a strong bond with your dog if you include regular games. Always walk your Australian Terrier on a leash, as they have a strong instinct to chase anything that moves.
