Muscle Memory in Baseball

As I’ve said for many years, muscle memory is the key to getting better at anything. Muscle memory causes you to play at the level you are currently at. If you are not playing very well, change your muscle memory.

Muscle memory can cause a hitter to ground often for outs, it can cause a pitcher to keep throwing the ball too high in the strike zone, as well as many other things. Your baseball game is the total sum of your muscle memory.

So what is muscle memory? Muscle memory is the programming of your muscles. Get up, walk to the other side of your house and come all the way back. I’ll bet you did not think about every step you took. Why? Because the movements and what it takes for you to walk, run, clap, etc have been built into your muscles memory. You’ve programmed your body how to do things without having to think about it. That’s the secret!

So let’s apply this to baseball. How you currently field, hit pitch, run, think is all programming that you have developed over the time that you have been playing the game. So, if you want to play better than you are right now, you have to change your muscle memory to a programming that gets better results.

Its funny, many times in my coaching career I will change a player’s mechanics and tell them to do an action (hitting for example) in a different way than they are used to. The response is interesting…”that doesn’t feel right” or “that doesn’t feel comfortable”. Which is how it should feel! It’s shouldn’t feel right. It should feel weird! Why? Because you’re doing it different than you’ve ever done. That’s a good thing (if the coach knows what they are talking about…which I do) because as the saying goes, “if you want different result than you’ve ever gotten, you have to do things differently than you’ve ever had to do them.”

The Number One Way to Win a Soccer Game

Filed under: Team Sports — Tags: — admin @ 9:21 am

I noticed one aspect of a soccer game that when I played with my high school soccer team which got ranked by USA Today number 3rd in the nation that really helped us to win games on a consistent basis. So no matter what goals we set for the game this individual goal was what really set the tone and what we worked on constantly in every soccer training session. So what is it exactly?

Well we always set a goal before every game that we would win 50/50 balls. So if there was a loose ball instead of it being 50/50 it was our goal to make that ball a 60/40 ball meaning we would win it no matter what. Goals kicks we would win as well. The reason this works so well is it immediately put the other team on their heels and instills a little fear in them. Our first tackle of the game was always a hard one and it really set the tone for us winning loose balls all game long.

Soccer Coaching Drills or Soccer Activities?

Filed under: Team Sports — Tags: — admin @ 9:11 am

I really hate the term “soccer drills” To me the word “drill” means a boring, mundane ritual meant to remove decision making for the participant. This is great for the military where there is a chain of command and following orders is paramount.

Soccer, however, is a player-centric sport, not a coach-centric sport. You must develop players who can make quality decisions under pressure. They must be able to be creative and adapt to changing circumstances.

Soccer drills will not accomplish this. Lines, laps and lectures will not create good players. You must put players in activities that resemble a real game environment.

Quality soccer activities involve goals, attacking, defending and transition. Get your players into activities that look as much like the game as soon as possible. This is the quickest path to player development. Avoid situations where your team is standing in line for long periods of time without getting work in. Even when doing skill repetition, movement should be involved.

When the Plyometrics Exercise is the Answer!

Have you been trying to get a really high vertical jump but can not seem to manage it? Maybe you want to push your body so that you can make a real difference? Well whichever you are striving for, we have the solution. It comes in the form of a plyometrics exercise routine which you can do at home or in the gym. These exercises will work your muscles and get you jumping higher than ever. Read through this article and see what you think of these exercises and if you can fit them into your routine.

How many vertical jump programs have you seen online and thought “wow they’re cheap” or “can they really give me that kind of result in 2 weeks?” The problem with these programs is that they tend to ruin it for everyone else and promise you things that just aren’t realistic. In order to get a really high vertical jump, you need to change the tone and definition of your leg muscles and this can take time. You need to work on this over several months rather than several days in order to get realistic and long lasting results.

We have found that the best vertical jump program is the vertical jump bible. This program gives you realistic targets and a complete plyometric workout for you to follow too. You will be able to work on each exercise by reading through the step by step guide and following lots of pictures. You will be able to not only get higher jumps but will know that you have achieved it yourself and properly rather than relying on cheat methods or false promises that won’t work for you. Work out harder today and get the results you really want so that you can jump higher and better.

Soccer for Kids

Filed under: Team Sports — Tags: — admin @ 11:48 am

Soccer is such a difficult sport. It requires a lot of positive physical characteristics. Parents who are in love with this sport ensure that their children also get exposed in it. It has lots of benefits for children. Playing soccer is a way for children to make friends and being involved promotes self-esteem. When they become athletes, they become often more careful about taking care of themselves and avoiding habits that can detract from their game. Parents know this and are willing to buy expensive gears like Adidas Goalkeeper Gloves and uniform for their kids. Self confidence and pride are just among the other positive results of soccer. Soccer players always develop a team attitude and become protective of each other. This is a very good value that must be learned by kids while they are young. They learn to care about the other team members and look out for them in other areas of life besides soccer.

Football Macthes

Filed under: Team Sports — Tags: — admin @ 5:20 am

Going to watch a football match as a child are some of the best memories I have of growing up. Everything from watch the goalkeeper put on his goalkeeper gloves to watching all 22 men run out on to the pitch, the whole day is a spectacle.

The stadium makes a large difference of course. Modern stadiums can hold up to 90,000 people and the noise that they can create is deafening. Experiencing your side scoring the winning goal with thousands of other fans really is something that you will never forgot.

Football grounds are far more family friendly in the 21st century and hooliganism is something of the past. There is very little fighting at grounds these days although there is quite a lot of bad language so may not be suitable for young children. This shouldn’t put you off though, to deprive a young child of expereincing a football really is not on!

Has Rooney Lost It ?

Filed under: Team Sports — Tags: — admin @ 9:21 pm

Wayne Rooney’s performance in the World Cup has been very poor. For most of last season he was on fire, scoring 36 goals for Manchester United. He had an injury in March and has not looked the same since. Going into the World Cup he was expected to recapture his form and was talked about as one of the best few players in the world alongise the like of Messi, Torres and Ronaldo. It wasn’t to be. His performances throughout the world cup have been terrible. He has had no impact. Never looked like scoring and couldn’t seem to hold on to the ball for more than a few secons. Just a shadow of his former self.

An opportunity lost for Rooney but also a worry for Alex Ferguson. Manchester United are as reliant on Wayne Rooney as England are. If he continues this loss of form into next season and can’t recapture his Manchester United gifts then United’s hope of regaining their Premiere League crown are sunk.
